PROFESSIONAL CONSULTATION
Specialized support for clinicians navigating perinatal mental health, reproductive grief, and loss.
Some clinical work asks us to sit with experiences that are extraordinarily difficult to hold.
A pregnancy ends unexpectedly. A client receives a devastating prenatal diagnosis and must make decisions they never imagined facing. A parent is pregnant again after loss and struggling to tolerate the uncertainty. Grief and trauma are intertwined, and it can be difficult to know what requires treatment and what simply needs room to be grieved.
Clinical consultation offers a space to slow down, think carefully about the work, and strengthen your ability to remain present with clients whose experiences may feel complex, unfamiliar, or emotionally demanding.
Areas of Consultation
Consultation may be especially helpful when working with:
-
Miscarriage and recurrent pregnancy loss
-
Stillbirth
-
Termination for medical reasons (TFMR)
-
Infant and neonatal loss
-
Infertility and fertility treatment
-
Pregnancy after loss
-
Birth and reproductive trauma
-
Perinatal anxiety, depression, and adjustment
-
Grief, traumatic bereavement, and continuing bonds
-
Differential diagnosis in the context of grief and loss
-
Clinician countertransference and the emotional impact of this work
A Place to Think About the Work
Consultation is not about finding the perfect intervention or the right thing to say.
Often, the questions are more nuanced:
What am I seeing clinically?
What belongs to grief, and what might require additional assessment or treatment?
How do I support this client without inadvertently pathologizing their grief?
How do I work with trauma without treating away the attachment?
How do I respond when there is nothing I can do to change what happened?
What is this work bringing up in me?
Together, we can explore case conceptualization, clinical interventions, differential diagnosis, ethical considerations, resources and referrals, and your own experience of sitting with the client.
You Don't Have to Specialize in Grief to Encounter It
You may never choose reproductive loss or perinatal mental health as your specialty.
But if you work with women, parents, couples, or families, these experiences will eventually enter the therapy room.
The goal of consultation is not to give you a script for grief. It is to help you develop the knowledge, clinical judgment, and capacity to stay present when it arrives.
